James was born in San Diego, California and studied environmental design at the Art Center College of Design because it encompassed architecture, furniture, graphics and objects. His work has appeared in numerous publications, has been exhibited at the Museum Angewandte Kunst and resides in the permanent collection of the Museum of Bags and Purses in Herengracht, Amsterdam.
Since the early 2000s industrial designer and artist James Piatt has worked in a wide range of categories including product development, architecture, interior design, painting and sculpture. While his designs for handbags, furniture and lighting draw from deeply personal and humorous ideas his collaborations with American manufactures like Kohler, TOTO and Speck Products reach a more universal audience. Throughout his career he has been interested in the relationship between engineering and art and how we interact with and experience objects and spaces.
