Hillory Rex was born and raised in Los Angeles. She is a graduate of CalArts and currently works as a visual artist.
My paintings explore and critique our obsession with self, narcissistic and introspective through representation and narrative. I explore via text the thoughts and feelings of the subject as they observe themselves both psychologically and physically. The figures are both realistic and fake, some aspects painstakingly rendered and others merely sketched out. There is no attempt to ground them, they float in space, outlined, turning them into the sticker-like commodified representations of themselves that we present to the world. My current series of paintings examines the mind-fuck of our modern culture by doing a deep dive into my own psychology.
