Hannah and Emma

HANNAH GETZ + EMMA BERLINER

The works on display represent the beginning of our lives as artists; some pieces are complete, some are in a state of flux, but all come with the promise of more. Hannah Getz’s work with fabric seeks to find the romance and movement in what is hidden. While Emma Berliner's film and watercolor works look for contemporary pertinence and humor through her exploration of obsolete, tactile, and out of fashion mediums.

River of Wings (ROW) is comprised of kinetic, avian inspired sculptures, each one reimagined and personalized by members of the community. In the fall of 2014, the “flock” will be installed along a half mile section of the bike path of the L.A. River. Each perch will be equipped with a solar light, illuminating not only the visually stunning birds, but also the bike path transforming the space into a safe welcoming environment for cyclist, pedestrians, and families. Sprinkled throughout the installation of 60 birds, there will be 20 birds equipped with sculptural elements that create a sonic experience with music or sound activated by the visitors and the natural forces of winds, light, and heat.

As visitors traverse the space, they will activate the movement of the wings, read messages written by the community, create their own sonic imprint, and enjoy the diverse artwork of each bird. From afar, the dancing wings mesmerize Angelinos, tempting them to descend into the natural oasis where city-dwellers reconnect with the earth and their city. Up close, the flock of birds in flight will give the impression that you are soaring with the birds, giving Angelinos an invigorating sense of movement and freedom. Even driving by, the River of Wings will captivate your imagination and disrupt the ordinary making that moment extraordinary.

ARTWALK LOCATION: TBD

My paintings grow from the bones of mythology and folklore, interweaving traditional and modern allegories of life, death, transition and rebirth. Some of my stories are inherited, others come to me in dreams.
I use vibrant colors to portray life energy, polarity and transition. Feisty Tricksters, traveling Changelings and formidable Goddesses are recurring mythic archetypes representing fate and our ability to grow and transform through whatever life throws our way.

Knotwork

ARTWALK LOCATION: RACDB 3048 North Coolidge Avenue
Knotwork LA was created as a outlet to identify the work we do in our spare time, it began as evenings and weekends spent in the shop and studio, precious pieces of wood saved from other projects or found while hiking, ideas that came to us in the middle of the night, and a desire to create beautiful, useful things.

RuckusRoots

ARTWALK LOCATION:  2902 Gilroy Street

NELA-based non profit RuckusRoots teamed up with 127 middle school students from Academia Avance in Highland Park, CA to create an interactive sculpture made from recycled materials. The program, called TRASHformation, was the only arts education the students received all semester. At the beginning of the program, we asked participants to come up with ideas for an art piece that would positively affect their community. The winning idea, by 11-year-old Brisa Cabrera Diaz, is entitled “Your Hug,” and is an 11-foot tall sculpture of a teddy bear that absorbs feelings. As Diaz wrote in her proposal, “My art piece is of emotion. When you’re sad you hug it and when you’re mad you can talk to it about your madness. Express your feelings to it.” When participants speak (or laugh or sing) into a nearby microphone, the bear lights up in response

Grain Surboards

ARTWALK LOCATION: 2041 Blake Ave

Grain Surfboards began in the basement of a home minutes from the waves in York Beach, Maine. Mike LaVecchia combined his love of board sports with a passion for traditional wooden boat-building techniques to create works of art for riding waves. Within a short time Brad Anderson and then Allen Anderson (no relation) joined as co-owners.  Then with the help of some friends, Grain has grown into a full-fledged surfboard manufacturer known for innovative techniques, classic designs and ground-breaking products.
